Cindy Sherman is, unarguably, a big deal. Whether you like her or not, she's there. Starting with her most famous project Untitled Film Stills she gained international respect, with the 69 black and white (mostly) self portraits she took mainly in her apartment, with her own props (Untitled #84 #30 #53 above, respectively). Sherman then progressed onto color, with her wild and otherworldly photos of clowns, pulling faces at the camera, photoshop evident in her work. Then were the Sex Pictures taken in the 1990's, depicting mannequins and dolls in seemingly sexual poses, but really putting meaning into "our common humanity," as said by a photo critic in a published work she wrote on Cindy.
Personally, I'm not the hugest fan of Cindy Sherman's. I do really enjoy her projects Untitled Film Stills and Bus Riders , but it stops there for me. Her latest work has been a jumble of trying too hard, bad color unity, lack of emphasis on any given object because of the complete sharpness and business of the photo, no use of the rule of thirds (which normally I'm not against, but it's just too much). Her photos lack originality to me, even if it's the first time I've seen her actual photos. She should have just stood with the styles she displayed in her earlier works, to me.
