for my final project, I chose to do a printed photo collage on a 2x3ft piece of plywood. I tried to focus on the relationship between emotion and color and mixing that with portraiture. I really enjoyed this project because it helped me with my style and possibly my concentration for AP next year. This was definitely a building block to a start of a style I enjoy, and can hopefully pursue in the future.

This project was another in progress to my final montage project, and this time I focused more on mood and color. Often times the color red is seen as fierce or angry, and I wanted to show that but keep the softness of my model intact. I really enjoy portraiture, and hope to continue doing it in the future.
this project was a mini series that is part of a larger 3D project, and I chose to focus on perspective for part of the piece. Perspective can manipulate the mood and message of the photograph, and I'm very interested in that subject, and that's what drove this project. I like to capture people in a portrait style, but it was a challenge for me to get used to this new way of taking pictures.
abstracted this photo was taken through the window of a bakery in dinky-town. two teenagers are in conversation at the bartop, and the reflection of the city outside is shown in the picture. the meaning is to create awareness for the abstractedness in our everyday lives, and how technology has contributed to this abstractedness. this photograph captures the "decisive moment" with how everything is placed. I chose the angle where I would not appear in the reflection, but so it would capture what the average passerby sees walking past. the car was placed well, in my opinion. if it was placed anywhere else, the composition could have been off-balance and not as good of a photograph. I wish that I had kept myself out of the photograph more, because the more I look at it the more I can see myself, but I also really like the way things lined up; the fridge and the building matches up almost perfectly that I feel like this is one of my most successful photos. all we grow [named after an s. carey album I bought there] this photo was taken on accident, really. I was testing the lighting in the record store while I was in line, and thankfully I took it at this time because the girl at the register heard my (three times) shutter and turned away a second later. The picture captures two customers at a record shop in uptown called 'treehouse records.' I have been to this particular record store a few times, and each time I fail at taking sneaky pictures. this happens to be my most successful. the shop-owner always talks to me about the joys of shooting street photography in color but refuses to have his picture taken, so I thought i'd keep this one in color as a tribute to him. This photo displays the "decisive moment" in the ways I've stated above. the expression of the man on the right was a one-second emotion, and the indifference of the two others was crisp in the picture because it was the one point where they weren't talking, which would have ruined the picture with some blur. I'm not the most proud of this one because it's more boring than other photographs, but I like the colors and the balance in the picture. treehouse records this photograph was taken outside of treehouse records in uptown minneapolis on my seventeenth birthday. I don't usually take pictures of things (i.e. without people) but I like the way this photo turned out. the two open doors add balance to the photograph and the extreme range in value moves the eye. unfortunately, this photo doesn't really capture a "decisive moment." it may have captured a decisive minute, or a decisive hour, but there isn't a split second decision in this picture. I think this is one of my more successful people-less photos, because I really tried to make it look like an older photograph. the buildings are obviously a little older, and the b&w with high contrast adds to that, but the 'Bernie 2016' poster in the window contrasts that feeling, which I enjoy.
club owner smoking a cigar and drinking a coke while reading the newspaper the man in this photograph was a club owner sitting outside his building as I walked past. the conversation above was the words between the two of us while I took pictures of him. everything about the photo is organic; I didn't change anything. whenever I look back at this set of photos I get a feeling of happiness, because it was the first warm day of the year and this was probably the first day he was able to spend the day outside, and I feel like the warm color of the background reflects this emotion. in a way, this photo captures a "decisive moment." if I had not gathered the courage to go up to him, none of the pictures I took would have existed. I also caught him mid conversation, which I am fortunate enough to have because usually they would be blurry (some of them are, but I am not posting those). Although this isn't one of my best photos, I like that I was able to go up to a stranger and ask to take their picture. blue lady this woman was probably my favorite model of the day, and maybe the nicest stranger I have ever come across. she was trying to sneakily take pictures of bikers nearby when I almost quite literally ran into her, and she was more than happy to pose for a picture. we talked about the benefits of spending time in uptown during high school and dog themed tattoos [dog and tattoo of said dog in picture above]. this photo reminds me that adults can be cool too, and colorful hair isn't reserved for people under eighteen. also her dog is cute again, this photo isn't one of my proudest pieces, but I enjoy the memory that comes with it, and that makes me enjoy it more. man and his dogs
this man and his dogs were waiting outside of a framing store with his dogs, and were my first models of the day. it started out as a photo-shoot of his dogs, but I zoomed out enough to catch his brief proud smile. this photo isn't the most clear, but I think the models overshadow the mistakes made in the picture. to me, this picture displays the "decisive moment." if I had waited a second longer on the shutter, even if it would have made the picture clearer, his smile probably would have been gone. this is probably my least favorite picture of the ones i'm posting, due to the lighting and blurry parts, but street photography is a learning experience, and I want to keep my mistakes up for later when I improve and look back at my old photographs.
i enjoyed working on this project because it changed the way i look photography, and i feel like juxtaposition adds more subtle meaning to a picture, which can change the entire mood of the photograph.
Photographed by Tyler Shields for Vanity Fair This picture showcases juxtaposition and irony perfectly. The man wearing typically womanly attire and the woman wearing a suit (typically 'manly' attire) and their expressions show irony in our gender structured society today. The photograph becomes even more juxtapose when one realizes that the woman is wearing a 'proud' and 'confident' expression (the male position of power clearly shown) and the man is wearing a more subdued expression. Photographer Unknown This picture is juxtapose because of the contrast in facial expressions present in the photograph. The woman's frown is opposite to the smiling face drawn in the window. Photographer Unknown This photo shows juxtaposition because of both the contrasting colors and the baby and older person's hands. The baby and older person show juxtapose because they are opposites of each other. Photographed by Tyler Shields This picture is juxtapose because it displays a rearrangement of power. In normal circumstance, a police officer would be holding down a citizen, not the other way around. This juxtapose photograph shows both irony and contrast with the authority figure as the theme. Photographer Unclear
This photograph is juxtapose because it displays two different takes on the definition of 'home,' and in a literal sense, using tree roots to symbolize 'roots' as in 'where you grew up.' This also shows irony because of the urbanization of the world that was quite literally built on top of trees and nature. heres a link to a powerpoint for lighting:
